and the town of Blowing Rock.  And you can walk to the outlet Shoppes without having to drive anywhere.

Ed and Nikki Burke, who bought the inn last year, will recommend area restaurants and make arrangements and reservations at area attractions for you.

In an area known for great mountain views, Cliff Dwellers Inn has some of the best. From here you take in the entire autumn leaf season without driving off the grounds.  The inn is just a mile south of the Blue Ridge Parkway, off U.S. 321.  The ascent from the highway to the inn seems to go straight up, giving you the sensation that the property has been chiseled into the mountain.

But this place has none of the closed-in feel of many mountain cabins.  The guest rooms are unusually spacious, with large windows to take advantage of the mountain views, and airy, cheerful furnishings that emphasize the light.  Balconies with rocking chairs run the length of the building.

Look down from the sundeck onto a rock garden; from various other perches see Lake Chetola and the Shoppes on the Parkway, across U.S. 321.

From here it's a quick drive to Tweetsie Railroad (828-264-9061), Appalachian Ski Mountain (800-322-2373),
